Overview · The Ancient War

Understand the essence of DotA — a 5v5 war to destroy the enemy Ancient

🗺️Map Overview

The DotA map is laid out with diagonal symmetry: the bottom-left is the Radiant (天辉) and the top-right is the Dire (夜魇). Each side has 3 lanes (top/mid/bottom), jungles between the lanes, and a central river that splits both territories.

🎯Victory Condition

The only goal: destroy the enemy Ancient. Everything — last hitting, team fights, killing Roshan, pushing towers — serves this single objective.

  • Ancient sits at the deepest point of the base, guarded by two base towers
  • When a Barracks is destroyed, your creeps on that lane get stronger and the enemy's get weaker
  • Towers come in 4 tiers (T1→T2→T3→base), taken one layer at a time

The 6.83 tempo is fast — carries often come online by 25-30 minutes, fights are frequent, and you need to build an advantage early.

DAY TWO

Heroes & Roles · Five Players, One Team

Understand the three attributes and the Position 1-5 system — the basis of team coordination

📊The Three Attributes

Strength (STR) — Each point gives +19 HP and 0.03 HP regen. Strength heroes are mostly front-line tanks/initiators.

Agility (AGI) — Each point gives +1 attack speed and 0.14 armor. Agility heroes are mostly physical carries.

Intelligence (INT) — Each point gives +13 mana and 0.04 MP regen. Intelligence heroes are mostly spell supports/burst.

Every hero has a Primary Attribute; each point in it adds an extra +1 attack damage, and it grows fastest on level up.

When picking a hero, the attribute largely determines the role: STR = tank/initiator, AGI = physical carry, INT = spells/support. But it is not absolute — combine it with the skills.

🔢The Position 1-5 System

The heart of DotA is resource allocation. The five players are ranked into positions 1-5 by economic priority:

1
Hard Carry
Safe lane
2
Mid
Mid lane
3
Offlane
Offlane
4
Soft Support
Roam/Jungle
5
Hard Support
Protects the lane
  • Position 1 (Carry): eats the most resources and takes over the late game. 6.83 examples: Troll Warlord, Sniper, Juggernaut
  • Position 2 (Mid): solo mid, the tempo driver of the mid game. Examples: Storm Spirit, Ember Spirit
  • Position 3 (Offlane): soaks pressure in the offlane, initiates/tanks. Examples: Axe, Centaur
  • Position 4 (Soft Support): roams and ganks with minimal farming. Examples: Earthshaker, Sand King
  • Position 5 (Hard Support): pure support, buys wards and babysits. Examples: Lion, Crystal Maiden

DAY THREE

Laning Basics · The Art of Last Hitting

Last hitting is DotA's fundamental skill — it decides your economy

⚔️What is Last Hitting

Last Hit: landing the killing blow on a creep to earn gold. It is the most important source of economy in DotA.

Deny:landing the killing blow on your own creep/tower/hero when below 50% HP, preventing the enemy from gaining gold — only a little XP.

🌊Controlling the Lane

Creep Equilibrium directly affects your safety and economy. The ideal state is the lane sitting just outside your tower, but not under it.

  • Pull to control: at :30 or the full minute, drag the neutrals onto the lane so your creeps fight them and the lane pushes back
  • Deny to push back: deny your own creeps as much as possible to reduce their numbers, letting the wave retreat
  • Aggro control: right-clicking an enemy hero draws creep aggro (about 500 range); use this to pull creeps toward you
  • Don't auto-attack the ground: attack-moving pushes the wave and hands the enemy a gank window

🎯Lane Harassment

Pressing the opponent is as important as last hitting:

  • Attack the enemy hero while they are locked in a last-hit animation
  • Use spells to harass (e.g. Lich's Frost Blast)
  • Control runes (every 2 minutes) for sustain or roaming

Surviving pressure:

  • Use tangos/salves to recover; don't greed for creeps
  • Pull to control the lane and farm safely under your tower
  • Call your support or mid to gank
  • If truly behind, just absorb XP — never feed kills

Item System · Equip Yourself

Understand item categories and core items — the key to getting stronger

🏬Shops & Buying

There are two shop locations on the map: the Base Shop (all basic items and recipe components) and the Secret Shop (advanced materials). Some top-tier items require components from the Secret Shop.

When buying, you can use quick-buy shortcuts and the system automatically deducts the materials from the Base and Secret shops respectively. A Courier then delivers your items.

DAY SIX

Vision & Map Control · Information is Power

Vision decides what you can see, and what you can see decides what you can do

👁️The Ward System

Observer Ward

  • Provides vision; cannot reveal invisible units
  • Lasts 6 minutes
  • Free supplies (limited at the shop)
  • Main spots: river, Roshan, enemy jungle entrances

Sentry Ward

  • Provides true sight (reveals invisibility)
  • Reveals invisible units and enemy wards
  • Lasts 3 minutes
  • Used to deward and prevent ganks

Dewarding: use a Sentry to find and destroy enemy Observer Wards — a must-have skill for high-level supports. Every ward you clear removes a chunk of the enemy's vision and keeps your movements safer.

🔮The Rune System

On both sides of the river, a rune respawns every 2 minutes (the first appears at 2 minutes). The rune types are:

RuneEffectBest timing
HasteMove speed capped at maximum for 30 secondsGank/Escape
Double DamageBase attack damage doubled for 45 secondsTeam fight/Push
IllusionSummons two illusions for 75 secondsConfuse/Push
InvisibilityInvisible for 45 secondsGank/Scout
RegenerationContinuously restores HP and MPSustain/Counter-fight
ArcaneReduces spell cooldown and mana costFight burst

📜Town Portal Scroll (TP)

The TP Scroll is one of the most important items in DotA, costing only 75 gold. It teleports you to any allied building — the core tool for supporting, defending and rotating.

  • Support: TP in when a teammate is ganked and turn the fight
  • Defend: TP back when the enemy pushes a tower
  • Rotate: after one lane is pressured, TP to another to keep farming
  • Always carry a TP! This is the habit new players ignore the most

DAY SEVEN

Team Fight Art · A Symphony of Five

Team fights are the most exciting and most complex part of DotA

🎭Team Fight Roles

RoleJobKey point
InitiatorStarts the fight, controls manyBlink + ultimate, e.g. Axe/Enigma/Tidehunter
CarryDeals sustained physical damageFind the damage spot and time the BKB
BurstInstantly kills key targetse.g. Lion/Storm melting a support
SupportControl/heal/saveProtect the carry and land disables
TankAbsorbs damage, creates spaceStand on the frontline and draw fire

The Four-Step Fight Plan

  • 1. Scout & position: check the enemy's positions and cooldowns before fighting, decide your initiation target. Carry stays back; initiator looks for the angle.
  • 2. Initiate: the initiator Blinks in and drops the ultimate, locking as many as possible. A good initiation is half the win.
  • 3. Unload: the carry pops BKB and deals damage while burst deletes key targets (the enemy carry or main control). Supports follow up with disables.
  • 4. Chase or retreat: if you win, chase down the low-health stragglers; if losing, retreat in order and preserve the game. Don't mindlessly chase under enemy towers.

🛡️The Philosophy of BKB

BKB grants magic immunity and is the most important survival item in team fights. But its duration decreases with each use (from 10 seconds to 5), so timing is everything.

  • Don't open with it — wait for the enemy's key disables
  • Don't wait too long — your carry damage window may last only seconds
  • Watch the enemy: if their main control is already spent, you can output without BKB
  • BKB does not block physical damage — you still need good positioning with it
8
DAY EIGHT

Jungle & Roshan · Fighting for Resources

The jungle is your second economy; Roshan is the key to turning the game or ending it

🐺Neutral Stacking

Creeps get a respawn check at around :53 of every minute. If the camp has no creeps at that check moment (because you pulled them away), a new stack spawns, overlapping the existing creeps.

  • How to pull: attack the creeps at :52-:53 and lead them away from the camp
  • They turn back after chasing you a short distance — right as the minute rolls over and a fresh stack spawns
  • Multiple stacks accumulate a huge pile, which one AOE spell can clear at once — very efficient
  • A support stacking for the carry is the mark of a high-level support

🔗Creep Pulling

Pulling drags the jungle creeps onto the lane so your creeps fight them instead of pushing. This is the support's core lane-control technique.

  • Radiant bottom: pull the small camp around :15 or :45
  • Dire top: same principle, pulling the matching camp
  • After a successful pull, the wave retreats to your tower — safe and controllable
  • If you pull badly the lane can get out of control and you end up pressured — practice!

🐉Roshan — The Ultimate Fight

Roshan is the strongest neutral, sitting above the river in the center of the map. Killing him drops the Aegis, which resurrects its holder in place 5 seconds after death.

TopicDetail
LocationAbove the river, near the Radiant jungle entrance
RespawnRandom 8-11 minutes after being killed
When to takeAfter wiping the enemy / when their key hero is dead
DropsAegis (resurrection) / Cheese (bonus late drop) / Aghanim's Blessing
RiskGetting ambushed while doing Roshan = wipe + feeding an Aegis
9
DAY NINE

Tempo & Tactics · Global Awareness

From 'lanes won' to 'game won' — you need a sense of the global tempo

🏗️Pushing

In 6.83, pushing is one of the main ways to end the game. Both Troll Warlord and Sniper push towers exceptionally well.

  • When to take towers: after killing 1-2 of the enemy, push with the numbers advantage
  • Lane pressure: push two lanes at once to split the enemy's attention
  • High-ground defense: high-ground towers and barracks are the hardest to crack, needing an Aegis or a decisive numbers advantage
  • Don't overextend: retreat after one tower, don't dive the second and feed

🗡️Gank Tempo

Ganking is the core way to build an advantage in the mid game. A successful gank opens the game; a failed one wastes time and reveals your position.

  • Pick targets: prioritize the enemy carry or heroes without escape
  • Information gap: use your vision to move through areas the enemy cannot see
  • Use runes: gank immediately after grabbing Haste/Invisibility — it doubles your efficiency
  • Don't force it: if the enemy retreats under tower or brings backup, abandon the gank and go farm

📈Economy & Tempo Management

Carry tempo

  • Focus on farming the first 10 minutes unless a fight is adjacent
  • Join pushes and small fights in the 10-20 minute window
  • After 20 minutes, with BKB + core items, take over the game
  • One death = 30-60 seconds of lost farming + feeding the enemy

Support tempo

  • Early game babysit the carry, occasionally roam mid
  • Mid game follow ganks or protect the push
  • Handle vision all game — never skip wards for a gank
  • In fights, protecting the carry matters more than taking kills

🕐Timing Window Awareness

The core of DotA tempo is the timing window — at some moments you are stronger than the enemy, at others weaker.

  • Power spikes: right when you finish a key item (e.g. carry finishing BKB) — you are at your strongest
  • Weak windows: big ultimates on cooldown / core items not yet bought / teammates dead
  • Death-timer awareness: note when the enemy's key heroes respawn, and push with the man advantage before then
  • Roshan timer: track when Roshan died and be camped in position about a minute in advance
